The Diamond is composed of pure carbon that has been crystallized under enormous heat and pressure from deep within the earth. Diamond is the hardest known naturally occurring substance known to man. It has a hardness of 10 on the MOHS Table of Hardness. The name Diamond is derived from the Greek word "adamas" which means unconquerable. This gem is mostly found transparent and colorless. However, it is found in various yellows, pinks, conac, browns, blues, and black. Prior to the mid-nineteenth century, diamonds were worn only by men. Diamonds were once considered a talisman against phantoms and nightmares and were also supposed to give courage and virtue to soldiers in battle.
